Daman, thank you so much for joining us! Can you start off by telling us a little bit about you and your background…
Hello everyone, thank you so much for having me. So, after completing a degree in Accounting and Finance I knew I wanted to work in more of a trading business environment. Having worked in retail since I was young I knew buying and merchandising was the field I wanted to follow. Focusing on womenswear I have had amazing opportunities working for some great companies. Asos, Monsoon and Tesco gave me the building blocks to be able to start by own business.
What a great foundation! So why did you decide to launch your own kidswear line?
I have always wanted to run my own business but I suppose have never had the guts to in my early days. Gaining more experience and exposure in business gave me the confidence to slowly decide to launch Roses & Rhinos. Moving to Singapore from the UK really gave me that extra boost as there is an amazing entrepreneurial spirit there. Having 3 vibrant , fun , playful children made it an easy decision to decide to go into kidswear as they are my muses and help me design! They help me on the graphics, colours, and shapes. Basically designed by kids for kids!
That is incredible! How lovely that you can involve them in the business! So, why the name Roses & Rhinos and what makes you different?
My business model at the start was purely graphic designed t-shirts which were made to order . I wanted to give back and my first range was about endangered animals and proceeds of sales went to WWF. Hence Rhinos was chosen as part of the name. Not only do I think they are beautiful animals but to me, they depict the strength and resilience of kids too. I always love things that clash and that is part of our brand DNA. Roses is the clash; the beauty of the Rose against the toughness of a Rhino. Just like my children.
Love that concept and that is too true and Rhino’s! Can you tell us about the brand and your ethos?
Roses & Rhinos is primarily a print led business. We design our prints and put them onto modern silhouettes. Our shapes have to be very comfortable- minimal fastenings, elasticated waists, loose fitting and soft. This is our core. Our prints are graphically designed to be worn ‘matchy matchy’ if needed but ‘mish mash’ is how we style our clothes. I feel that’s what makes us different. Colour, vibrance and fun is our DNA. Having worked in the fashion arena for +20 years I wanted to make sure we are a sustainable company. We work with small family owned factories and manage the whole production chain. Our new collection will be on Organic Cotton to greater strengthen this. We still have more to do and this will evolve as we evolve.
What a fabulous ethos! So, last but not least, have you got anything exciting coming up that you can share with us?
Yes! The next year is going to be very exciting as we will be launching our Summer Breeze collection and showcasing at Mini Mode this September 15th.
We will be opening up to wholesale in order to go global and are currently finalising AW19. We are hoping to take to the key trade shows to connect with key accounts and grow Roses & Rhinos.
What an exciting time for Rose & Rhinos! We can’t wait to see you on the catwalk and for everyone to see your wonderful creations. All we can say is that we hope that everyone is prepared to be WOWED.
Thank you so much for joining us and for telling us a little bit more about your journey to date. Shop Roses & Rhinos here and follow their journey.
